A variety of production features have benefited the Lego company throughout its history. These features have allowed Lego to create some of the most adored toys in the world. These features include the creation of a unique interlocking mechanism and the use of plastic instead of other materials. Dagny, Godtfred Kirk Christiansens cousin, joined the company in the year 1960 as a model builder. Dagny was adept at making large scale models and worlds that were displayed in the showroom. This was an effective way to show the possibilities of the LEGO bricks and also to create interest among children.
In 1971, the LEGO system began to expand with the addition of furniture pieces and dollhouses. The LEGO system further grew in 1972, with the addition of ship and boat sets that had hull pieces floating. In the 1960s, the company began its international expansion by selling products in North America via a licensing deal with Samsonite.
In the 1980s, the company continued to expand and diversify, as well as modernize. This led to the creation of an R&D department which has worked to keep the LEGO system at the top of its game in terms of innovation. It also saw the introduction of themed sets that allowed users to build specific models without having to figure out what to do on their own.
